Dogs licking our face is a very common act that they do even if they are not our own pet. We perceive it as kissing us, but why do they persistently try to do it on our face and not somewhere else, have you asked yourself?
Let’s start by saying that not all dogs had or have always lived in a sheltered environment with humans. Dogs are trained – like wolves – to live in packs. So the young puppies, who do not live in a protected environment, lick their mother’s muzzle to activate her to chew their food (from milk to chewing solid food there is time). At this stage of their lives, their survival is truly and entirely dependent on their mother.
Although this is not common in puppies that are born and raised with us, their instinct remains. Therefore, it is normal behavior for a dog to want to lick our face and/or hands as a sign of submission and affection. We could say that he actually recognizes us as “mother” in his pack, our family.
If this behavior bothers us and we want to limit it then this should be done gradually by distracting the dog at the moment he does it, for example by using a toy.
In case that we have difficulty and if we have the dog health program we do care pet, we can use the training benefits.
The training of our pets is particularly important because it contributes to their proper socialization, to understanding the rules of cohabitation and cohabitation and the ways of communicating with us. Through our dog insurance program, we have 2 FREE basic obedience and socialization trainings (lessons) per year and a 30% discount on the current price list, on all other courses!
