The question that arose after the pandemic in the daily insurance is “Can someone who already got sick with covid-19, take out Life and Health insurance?”.
The answer is yes! “Someone who has contracted coronavirus and is now healthy can take out life and health insurance with certain specific conditions depending on each company and each case of a candidate for insurance.”
The issue concerned both the interested clients and us, the intermediaries, who in everyday life met and still meet candidates for new life and health insurance.
As it is known, in order to take out insurance, one must enjoy good health and state in detail his / her health history in the initial insurance application. Then the competent departments of the companies evaluate the declared and either accept or reject the insurance, or accept the insurance with certain special conditions. With the outbreak of the pandemic, in addition to this process was added the evaluation of those who are already ill with coronavirus and now want to take out a life and health insurance. It is noted that those who were already insured and had a life and health contract before the appearance of the coronavirus, were covered and are covered according to the terms of their contracts.
Some companies, in an effort to clarify the issue but also to strengthen the difficult work of ombudsmen who come into contact with society, added questions about coronavirus in the health questionnaires and informed the insurance ombudsmen partners how to insure such cases.
Not all cases of patients are the same and are evaluated differently according to the patient’s severity and manner of treatment, the recovery period, the period of illness that occurred before the date of insurance application and the current state of health. Some of those interested were asymptomatic, some became ill with mild symptoms at home, some were hospitalized in a single bed and some were treated by intubation in an Intensive Care Unit. In any case, the intermediaries must ask in detail and those interested in new insurance must describe in detail.
The discussions are many and each company maintains its own rules for accepting or not accepting an insurance. So if a prospective client was asymptomatic or with mild symptoms and had not been treated, then his / her insurance may be accepted with a waiting period of for example one or two months from the date of diagnosis and if the patient has recovered and is now healthy. For example, if a patient has been hospitalized with coronavirus in a single bed, has been discharged from the hospital and is now in good health, his / her insurance may be accepted with a special condition excluding coronavirus disease and any complications for a period of time such as 3,4, for example. 5 months. In another case, if the candidate was hospitalized with a coronavirus in an Intensive Care Unit, ie the person concerned became seriously ill, then his / her insurance may be postponed for a certain period of time, rejected or covered by a special condition for excluding coronavirus disease and any for a specific period of time such as 6 months. In any case, however, no one can be insured when he is ill or recovering or his good health has not been restored. A reasonable period of time must elapse between the date of recovery or the date of discharge from the hospital until the date of commencement of insurance.
Depending on the person concerned, during the insurance application, medical examinations, documents and information that will be requested by the competent departments must be provided. In this way, ie with a proper medical evaluation and with the cooperation of the parties, stakeholders, intermediaries and companies, those who have contracted coronavirus and have the medical conditions for it can be insured.
However, it is important that the relevant medical history is accurately stated in the insurance application and that the relevant examinations, if any, are attached. The assessment must be made with absolute transparency and coverage must be given – whatever the expectation or exception – with the knowledge of the insured. It is not desirable for any side to start a health coverage and in the process to be faced with a negative surprise of refusing to pay compensation. This is the golden rule for knowing what we are paying for.
