The goal of a study of 49,000 postmenopausal women in the United States was to look at how to reduce their risk of breast cancer, colon cancer and coronary heart disease with a low-fat diet.
After almost 9 years of dietary change, the researchers found no significant change and results, but after long-term follow-up of almost 20 years, the researchers found really significant benefits:

“The results show that low-fat diets rich in fruits, vegetables and seeds have long-term health benefits without adverse effects”.

The results were published in the September issue of the Journal of Nutrition and the research is part of the well-known Women’s Health Initiative, which began in the United States in 1993.
