wedo.insure has created the “we do care pet” program, with which pets receive health benefits. In this context, wedo.insure offers one year free insurance for adopted dogs. We talked about this pioneering initiative with the CEO of wedo.insure, Katerina Charalampidou.
I have been a member of MDRT for the last 3 years. One of the actions of MDRT is to enable all its members to propose once a year a non-profit company in their country that needs help.
But where is the money and how does it work? I mention information because it is worth listening to! MDRT has created MDRT Foundation through which the collection of sponsorships is organized every year, mainly by the members of the organization but also by anyone worldwide who wants to donate money to help those who need it. On November 10, 2020, MDRT Gives Day was organized, which raised $ 253.000 from 1528 global donors in just one day!
After collecting each year the total amount of sponsorships, the organization selects non-profit organizations from around the world and promotes charity (giving) through the sponsorship-financing of those who are approved.
In 2019 I had a recommendation to dog’s voice and in 2020 to karkinaki, which were both approved!
We created the “we do care pet” program in collaboration with the safe pet system and we give it for free for one year to anyone who adopts a dog. At this stage we still inform the animal lovers to integrate it in their communication. It does not limit our scope but mainly that the contracted network of veterinarians and hospitals is Athens and Thessaloniki. Of course we believe that if the number of insured animals increases it will help – force the expansion of the existing network.
The insurance consciousness of the Greeks has increased significantly in recent years and we are very happy to see their love for animals grow at the same time. Significantly more Greeks have acquired pets in the last 2-3 years and our incarceration due to covid-19 has played a role in this, it is my personal assessment. An important indication of this is the changes that are taking place in the tourism industry with a sharp shift of hotels to pet friendly accommodation. Recently, companies such as WOOF Together have been created, which purposefully promote the training of hoteliers and also provide the appropriate equipment in those hotels that turn to welcoming animals.
Pet insurance in Greece is still at a very low level and one reason today could be because it is not at all known that there are corresponding insurance products. This is not the case in developed countries abroad as animal welfare culture and the responsibility of adopting a pet have been cultivated there much earlier. Combined with the also developed insurance conscience of residents in foreign countries, insuring your pet with a health plan is perfectly reasonable as it relieves the family piggy bank of unexpected expenses.
I believe that the Greek market is now mature enough to start embracing the private health insurance for the pets he has in his home. The Greek now considers these animals as his family and takes care of them as if they were his “4-legged children”! And who would not do the best for anyone he loves?
Most are very excited as they realize how much money they save by using the program and gratefully call us back to thank us! Those who do not feel the same, I appreciate that is the case that the existing network of veterinarians and animal hospitals has not helped them. But like all things that are in the beginning, I am absolutely sure that very soon the network will expand throughout Greece as the need will be created immediately. I believe that in the coming years it will be a pleasant one-way way to insure pets for their owners!
